Scrolling Lotus Underglaze Decoration · Four-Petal Ruyi Opening with Gold Rim · Barrel Form: Stable and Proportioned

A Considered Place for the Lid.

The ovanyu Blue and White Ceramic Teapot Lid Rest is a small, functional ceramic piece designed to hold a teapot or gaiwan lid off the tray surface between steepings. The body is a compact barrel form — 4.8 cm in diameter, 5 cm tall — with a four-petal ruyi-shaped opening at the top where the lid rests. The exterior is hand-painted in cobalt blue underglaze on a white ceramic ground with a scrolling lotus pattern in the traditional chan zhi lian style: continuous flowering vines that move around the full circumference of the piece without interruption. The rim of the opening is gilded with a fine gold line. The piece is made by hand in Dehua, Fujian — a kiln region known for porcelain production — and arrives in protective packaging.

Why You'll Love It
  • Scrolling Lotus Underglaze Decoration — The exterior carries a cobalt blue scrolling lotus pattern painted in underglaze on a white ceramic ground. The chan zhi lian motif — continuous interlocking vines and lotus flowers — covers the full surface of the barrel body without blank areas, giving the piece a dense, detailed surface at a scale where the hand of the painter is visible on close inspection. The blue is a mid-tone cobalt without the washed-out quality of machine printing.
  • Four-Petal Ruyi Opening with Gold Rim — The top opening is shaped as a four-petal ruyi silhouette rather than a plain round hole. The edge of the opening is traced with a fine gold line that adds a distinct material contrast to the blue-and-white ground. The ruyi form supports the knob or finial of most standard teapot and gaiwan lids while keeping them elevated and stable above the tray surface.
  • Barrel Form: Stable and Proportioned — The barrel body is low enough to keep the lid close to the tray surface when resting, without the height of a stand-style lid rest. The 4.8 cm diameter provides sufficient base footprint to prevent tipping when a lid is placed and retrieved during a session. The form is compact enough to sit within the working area of most tea trays without competing for space with the teapot or cups.
  • Handmade in Dehua, Fujian — Dehua is one of China’s primary porcelain kiln regions, known particularly for white-bodied ceramics. The scrolling lotus decoration on this piece is hand-painted rather than transfer-printed, which means the line weight, detail, and minor variation across pieces are characteristics of hand production. No two pieces are precisely identical.
  • Functional and Display-Suitable — The lid rest functions as a working tool during a tea session and also holds as a composed decorative object on the tray when not in active use. The gold rim and cobalt blue surface are visually coherent with most blue-and-white ceramic teaware and with the broader vocabulary of classical Chinese porcelain.

  • Pattern: Scrolling lotus (chan zhi lian), blue and white
  • Dimensions: Ø4.8 cm × H5 cm
  • Opening: Four-petal ruyi silhouette, gold-rimmed

How to Use
  1. Place the lid rest on the tea tray beside the teapot or gaiwan, within easy reach during the session.
  2. After each steeping, lift the teapot or gaiwan lid by its knob and set it into the four-petal opening at the top of the lid rest. The ruyi silhouette holds the lid knob and keeps the interior of the lid facing up and away from the tray surface.
  3. Retrieve the lid to cover the pot before the next steep.
  4. After the session, rinse the lid rest with warm water and dry with a soft cloth. Pay particular attention to drying the gold-rimmed opening promptly.
FAQ

Q: What sizes of teapot lid will fit in this lid rest?
A: The four-petal opening accommodates the knob or finial of most standard gongfu teapots and gaiwans. Very large knobs on full-size teapots may not seat fully into the opening, but the lid will rest stably on the rim of the opening. This piece is sized for small-to-medium gongfu teapots and gaiwans, not for large Western-style teapot lids.

Q: Is the gold rim painted on or fired in?
A: The gold detail is applied to the rim of the opening and fired. It is part of the finished ceramic surface, not a cold-painted addition. As with all gold-decorated ceramics, avoiding abrasive scrubbers during cleaning will preserve the gold line over time.

Q: Does the blue-and-white decoration vary between pieces?
A: Yes, slightly. The scrolling lotus pattern is hand-painted, so the exact placement, line weight, and tonal variation of the cobalt blue will differ subtly from piece to piece. This is a characteristic of hand production rather than a defect.

Q: Is this only for teapot lids, or can it hold other items?
A: The piece is designed as a teapot or gaiwan lid rest. The four-petal opening can also hold small items like a tea pick or incense stick upright, but its primary function and sizing are for ceramic lids with a standard knob or finial.
